PHOTOS: Nyayo Stadium looking ‘international’ already… but after public uproar

Weeks after the uproar by Kenyans on the sad state of the Nyayo Stadium  Sports Cs Rashid Echesa has announced that the Nyayo Stadium is  now undergoing renovation.

The Sports CS  mentioned that the government is focused on ensuring sports infastructure are developed so as to improve the sports and get the opportunities to host international sporting events.

This announcement comes a couple weeks after Kenyans were angered by how the stadium was left in ruins.

The memory Kenyans had of the Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium is that it was full to capacity with floodlights fully lit.  But the pictures that were doing rounds on social media were not impressive.

Kenyans complained that only renovations at Kasarani had been completed, largely through sports betting company SportPesa helping to speed up construction works in order to ensure that the friendly matches could take place. What a shame!

Ten months later, Nyayo’s official reopening date continued to be shrouded in uncertainty. A perfect case and example of unfulfilled promises and a lack of respect for set deadlines when it comes to a sports projects in Kenya.

The repair works continued to be delayed by a lack of adequate funds as the project has not being accorded the priority it deserves, and a constant downing of tools by project contractors.

Its unavailability threw out a number of outdoor sporting activities into disarray. The renovation works  affected football, athletics, basketball, swimming to mention but a few.

Deputy President William Ruto was on record saying that Sh700m had been allocated for Nyayo’s renovation with a deadline of April this year for its reopening yet the fruits of this promise were not seen.

Finally after a long wait seems like the government has eventually decided to work on it.

Can we all see the light now? Hopefully the stadium will be ready for use soon.
