Why the Christmas holidays might not be so festive for some candidates

It could be a long, gloomy and not-so-festive season for a few candidates around the country who might not get the grades the hoped that they would. This realization comes as the Cabinet Secretary for Education CS Amina Mohamed yesterday announced that the results of the just concluded Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination will be released before Christmas.

Imagine getting your KCSE exam results few days before Christmas… There would be so much tension between you and your folks who often have expectations of the grades you should have achieved.

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed said that marking will be done in good time in order to allow parents to plan and properly budget for the end-year festivities.

“We promise to work very hard to ensure we deliver the results before Christmas,” Amina said.

While witnessing the sealing of the final 2018 KCSE exam paper at Nairobi School, the CS further said that President Uhuru Kenyatta will announce the official date when the results will be released.

Her sentiments were echoed by the Kenya National Examination Council Chairman George Magoha who also assured the country that the results would be out on time.

“We want parents to plan in advance so that they do not use all the money on Christmas and forget to plan for school fees of their children,” said Prof Magoha.

The two, KNEC Chairman George Magoha and CS Amina said the 2018 National exam was credible thanks to robust monitoring adding that although minimal malpractices were detected in some examination centers, the quality of the exam was not compromised.

Amina further said that 98% of contracted professionals and teachers who oversaw the exam displayed unparalleled commitment to high integrity.

 

 

Assistant chief examiners and team leaders have been meeting in Nairobi and it’s environ since November 15 for coordination exercise which is currently taking place at Murang’a Teachers’ Training College, Kilimambogo Teachers’ Training College, Thogoto Teachers’ Training College and Railway Training Institute and will end tomorrow, November 30.

The examiners who will do the actual marking of the scripts for the 664,585 candidates are expected in the 19 examination marking centres in Nairobi and its environs on December 3. They will subjected to proficiency tests by Kenya national examination chief examiners and those fail to get more than 90% will not be allowed to mark the scripts.

The examiners will also have to go through the dummies and discuss the marking scripts before the exercise begins on December 7. The marking of the scripts is expected to end by December 18.
