Many job seekers have fallen prey to conmen who seek to extort money from unsuspecting unemployed youth. The daring conmen have now taken advantage of desperate youth seeking internship and industrial attachment at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The office of the ODPP has today warned the public over con artists swindling cash from people following recent advertisements for pupillage and internships at the agency.

In a statement released on Thursday, Senior Assistant Director of Public Communication Beatrice Omari said that the conmen are calling applicants using an Orange network line and asking for Ksh. 3500 from the applicants for a purported medical test.

Applicants are told to go to Aga Khan Hospital for a medical test and are given the contacts of the “doctor” they are to see only by appointment.

“When you call the ‘doctor’ to book an appointment, the ‘doctor’ asks for money and takes your details. The doctor promises to send a report on the ‘test’ to the DPP. The doctor cautions you not to tell the DPP that you never took the test and the phone is disconnected,” Omari said.

The office of the DPP has now confirmed that a medical report is not part of the requirements for consideration for shortlisting advertised posts. The statement directed all those who have been deceived by the con artists to report the case adding that those who will be found to be conning the public will be dealt with.

“We, therefore, caution the public against falling prey to the con men. Anyone who may have been conned should report to the ODPP or the DCI. Those found culpable will be prosecuted,” reads the statement.
