Alcohol abuse is primarily an illness despite the fact that many of us may not view it as such. The alcohol epidemic in Kenya specifically the use and abuse of illicit brews is a menace that had destroyed our country’s economic and social stability even if we don not want to admit it.

Two people died and two others have lost their sight after they consumed alcohol at a wines and spirit in Mutindwa, Nairobi. According to witness reports, the two blind victims of illicit brew consumption have been admitted at Mama Lucy Hospital where they are receiving medical attention.

However, the Medical Superintendent at Mama Lucy Hospital, Dr. Musa Mohamed said that they only recieved one patient who they are currently attending to.

 

 

The owners of two wines and spirits and a manufacturer of counterfeit liquor in Umoja were arrested during an operation led by committee Area MP, MCA , Deputy OCPD, Chief and area residents. The suspects will be arraigned before Makadara Law Court.

Contradictory reports from Area MCA Mark Mugambi, who was part of the raid yesterday said that four people died, two from Umoja and another two from Kayole, while another two lost their eyesight.

His position was corroborated by MP George Theuri who also says that the death toll is at four.

Research done by the Center for Advocacy Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse in 2017 in several neighbourhoods in Kenya showed that most men spend their time in bars imbibing cheap alcohol.

Additionally, the consumption of illicit brews which leads to addiction is regarded as a disease which according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) affects the gastro-intestinal system, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, the reproductive system and the skin.

WHO also said that there is an increased likelihood of suffering from mental disorders as well as a drastic reduction in life expectancy]. The study revealed that the death rate among alcoholics is 2.5 times higher than normal.
