Why Arsenal’s new signing to time to find a place in the starting squad

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has opened up on why summer signings Lucas Torreira and Bernd Leno had to wait a bit longer to nail down starting berths at the club.

Torreira arrived at Emirates after signing from Italian outfit Sampdoria while Bernd Leno made the switch from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. Both were integrated slowly into the Arsenal team with Torreira making second-half appearances.

Leno had to wait until late September for his league debut after Petr Cech suffered an injury in the 2-0 win over Watford.

In an interview with Marca, Emery revealed respect was the reason for slowly integrating the two, “Because you have to respect hierarchies. If Leno comes as a signing, but Cech is doing well, we have to respect him. Petr was first. And the same happened with Guendouzi and Torreira, who arrived later. I kept the first one, which I love, although now I do not play and yes Lucas.”
