It’s a sigh if relief as the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) has ruled out the possibility of poaching after the recent death of three endangered black rhinos at the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

It’s not good news that the rhinos died but it is comforting to know that they didn’t die as a result of human greed as has been the case.

According to a Press statement released on Thursday, KWS says that investigations into the cause of the death of the three rhinos are still underway. The post-mortem report from the KWS Mobile Veterinary Unit showed that all the soft tissues and internal organs were missing having been scavenged.

“No injuries were observed on the remaining parts of the skin and bones,” the statement reads.

The statement also said that internal organs of the animals have been collected for analysis to establish the cause of the death.

The three rhinos, a male christened ‘Sairowua’,female Naiteru and a calf  ‘Kantai’ were found dead on Tuesday night with both their anterior and posterior horns intact and were initially observed to be in good health.

Given that the rhino shared the same territory, environmental samples from areas of common use (salt lick) were also collected.

The samples were submitted to the Government Chemist and University of Nairobi Veterinary School for toxicological and histopathology analyses.

KWS officials on Wednesday said that they believed that the rhinos might have consumed a poisonous plant while others said that the animals may have died of natural causes.

“KWS regrets the deaths and is working closely with Narok County Government to enhance round-the-clock monitoring of the remaining rhinos as we await results from the Government Chemist,” read the statement.
