Its week two of matatu crackdown and big brother is watching.
Following an announcement by NTSA director-general Francis Mejja, the organisation has embarked on undercover agents who will be strategically placed to ensure the enforcement of the famed “Michuki Rules” are followed to the latter.
In his statement, he said that, the undercover agents will be officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
In addition he said, that the agents will begin their operations as the Christmas festive season begins.
He added that they will collaborate with NTSA, traffic police and other State agencies to sustain the crackdown.
“All the agencies involved will step up surveillance, especially on major roads and blackspots, to ensure motorists adhere to safety rules. We will not relent,” he stated.
The move received support from Rift Valley Traffic Commandant Zero Arome and Nakuru County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha on Monday.
The two welcomed EACC’s involvement in the crackdown saying that it will ensure the exercise is clean.
Preliminary data indicates that the courts have collected millions of shillings in fines as thousands were arrested in various parts of the country in the first week of the crackdown.
Central region recorded the highest number of offenders with 5,600 arrests followed by Western region with 2,402, Nyanza at 2,389 and Nairobi had the lowest number of arrests at 1,200 people.
Passengers are being fined for stealing a ride, failing to wear a seat belt, failure to wear protective gear while on a motorbike, among other offences.
