Gor Mahia have confirmed assistant coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno will take charge of the club’s activities in an interim basis as the search for Dylan Kerr’s replacement continues.

Club Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lordvick Aduda told a local daily on Friday that the former Posta Rangers tactician will lead the club in the meantime as they prepare for the busy 2018/2019 season which kicks off with a Caf Champions League preliminary round tie against Malawi’s Nyasa Bullets.

Kerr resigned from his position as the club’s head coach on Thursday and is set to take up a new job elsewhere.

“We already have an assistant coach who has been preparing the team even before the Everton trip, he is even resumed training for preseason with them,” Aduda said.

“We’ve a pool of CVs that the technical committee will sit and come up with a shortlist but we hope to tackle it as soon as possible so that we’ve a new man at the helm sooner.”

This is the second time Zico has been handed the team on temporary basis in less than two years. He was in charge while Brazilian Jose Marcelo Ze Maria was away June last year and led the team to the final of the SportPesa Super Cup in Dar es Salaam. The former Kenyan international was also head coach at the club.

Meanwhile Kerr’s resignation has rocked the club, coming at the back of an impressive season which saw them win the Sportpesa cup and the Kenya Premier League title. The team was in Liverpool last week, where they took on EPL side Everton FC in a historic fixture.

It is believed that the coach resigned because the club couldn’t match his ambitions of progressing in the continental championships.
