Break the curse! Too many candidates die amidst KCSE exam

This year’s national examination has been faced with a number of unusual events but the most heartbreaking is the number of candidates that have died during the exam period. It can be quite devastating for the family, classmates, teachers and the entire institution at large.

It was a sad day for the entire fraternity at Atemo Mixed Secondary School in Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay county when a candidate identified as Toddy Otieno Ouma collapsed and died yesterday.

According to the Homa Bay County Commissioner Irungu Macharia, the student who was sitting this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam collapsed while playing football alongside other candidates in the school compound after completing the day’s exams.

Otieno was rushed to Matata Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This week, yet another KCSE candidate at Maiani Secondary School in Mukaa, Kilome lost his life after a fight with another student who kicked him on his abdomen. Benard Mutua, 18, was reportedly injured during a fight on Saturday but later developed complications and died on Monday evening.

Makindu sub-county medical superintendent, Kasanga David, said the patient was received on Monday at around 2.50 pm in an unstable condition and with a distended abdomen. The School Principal, Silvester Wambua said that he had handed over the matter to the police for investigation as a post-mortem is being conducted.

Gesiaga Secondary School in Nyamira is also mourning the loss of a candidate who collapsed and died soon after completing his Maths paper. According to the deceased’s father, Joshua Ongaga, his son had a history of heart complications.
“My son has a heart problem and we have been taking him for medication, his last session being at The Mater hospital in Nairobi,” he said.

The deceased’s body was taken to Kinara hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death.
While death is inevitable, the death of a fellow student and friend can really disorient other candidates. Do you think the government should be more intentional in having counselling sessions that will help other candidates cope with the death of their fellow students?
