3 more KCSE candidates to be deregistered after being found with phones

The Ministry of Education has expressed fears that the number of KCSE students caught cheating is increasing following the arrest of three more candidates. Chairperson to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) George Magoha said on Wednesday, November 14, that the candidates were likely to be deregistered.

During a live interview on KTN, Magoha said the accused were enrolled in schools in Garissa and Nairobi and Western Region counties. ” Two students from North Eastern were arrested with two cellphones in the exam room.

When the exams started, the phones were kept on and live answers started streaming in. At the end of the exam, someone started calling and demanded that money be sent to them. Our investigators then staged a probe,” revealed Magoha who reserved details of the schools involved.

The KNEC boss said sleuths managed to establish that the communication originated from special rooms created by teachers and other exam ‘specialists’. “The exams are now being done in universities in addition to being done in special rooms that have teachers who are supposedly experts,” explained Magoha.

Suspects involved, he said, have since been arrested adding that the students in the cheating scheme were discontinued from taking the exams. Magoha said that some unscrupulous center managers were involved in opening papers before the start of the exams and this contributed to cheating. On Monday, November 12, the ministry announced that four candidates had been deregistered following other separate cases of irregularities. In a separate story, Sources reported that a first year student at Maseno University was arraigned after he was busted sitting the tests at Nyansakia Secondary, Kisii County.
