ODM Welcomes Back Earlier Estranged Members

The Orange Democratic Party, ODM is no doubt a major political player in the country. If not for the fact that Uhuru Kenyatta’s TNA and Ruto’s then URP merged to form the larger Jubilee Party, ODM would have now been boasting as the largest political party in the country. But even at that, the Party is still older than Jubilee.

The party has of late made headlines for all the bad reasons ranging from unfair nominations and power wrangles. This has caused some sort of unease among members.

Last month the party through chairman John Mbadi announced that it had made changes to it’s leadership in the Nairobi County assembly.

The party did away with minority leader Elias Otieno and Minority Whip Peter Imwatok. This led to some sort of supremacy battle between ODM’s chairman John Mbadi and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna on who wields the power to make changes to the party leadership.

The wrangles were growing messy that the party leader Raila Odinga was even called to intervene but the scheduled meeting did not apparently take place.

After the protracted wrangles, the Party has today reinstated the minority leadership in the Nairobi County Assembly.

In a statement to newsrooms, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said Peter Imwatok and Elias Otieno, who had been replaced as minority whip and minority leader respectively, would resume their positions.

According to Sifuna, reinstatement of the two follows a resolution made during a joint meeting of Nairobi ODM MCAs and the Central Committee of the ODM Party held on Tuesday in Nairobi.

“The Minority Leadership of the house be retained as is with Hon. Peter Imwatok as Minority Whip and Hon. Elias Otieno as Minority Leader,” read the statement.

During the meeting, the leaders reportedly resolved to harmonize committee memberships within the next one week in a bid to ensure equity.

According to ODM Communications Director Philip Etale, the changes had been prompted by concerns raised by party members who felt that the current leadership was weak and needed to be firmed up.
