Detectives from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission today morning raided the homes of Governor Okoth Obado in Migori and Nairobi in search of documents and other material to aid in an ongoing probe on corruption allegations against him. The anti-corruption commission is investigating the loss of 2.5 billion Kenya shillings at the Migori county government.

Governor Obado is accused of embezzling the said county funds through his proxies.

“The commission received credible information that a few persons well known to be proxies of the governor, registered several companies for the purpose of fraudulent acquisition of public funds through fictitious contracts,” said EACC.

According to reports, the funds were allegedly wired to his children’s offshore accounts in Australia, Hong Kong and China. The authorities have since frozen accounts of five businessmen and three companies believed to be proxies or associates of the county boss.

“The preliminary investigations have raised reasonable suspicion that embezzled public funds have been used by the governor, his wife and the said close proxies, the respondents herein, to accumulate property and illicit wealth,” EACC said in documents filed in court.

Additionally, EACC and the Asset Recovery Agency have also frozen Obado’s bank accounts and those of his wife Hellen Adhiambo.

The anti-corruption commission revealed that the Ksh. 2.5 billion was paid out to the dubious companies over the last five years and was facilitated through registration of several companies that were awarded “inflated and fictitious contracts”.

Obado was in Nairobi at the time the officers raided his homes and office in Migori in search of evidence.

This new allegations come as a set back for the Migori governor who is currently facing murder charges of slain Rongo University student, the Late Sharon Otieno and her unborn child. Obado recently released on a Ksh. 5 million bail on October 25 after more than one month stay in custody at Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi.

This past weekend, Governor Obado asked Christians at Nyabururu Catholic Church to pray for him saying that he had been put in the crocodile’s mouth and felt as though he is walking through a fire.

“If you pray for me, I will get out of the crocodile’s mouth,” he said.

However, it now looks that the crocodile the Governor was referring to might actually be a reality.

Do you think the governor should be allowed to hold office after all these accusations?
