Speaking during the burial of former Nairobi Town Clerk John Gakuo in Ol Kalou, on Friday, November 10, Sonko attributed his action to the rogue and insensitive nature of judicial officers.
Gakuo died at Mbagathi hospital on Tuesday, October 30, when he was still serving a three-year jail term at Nairobi West prison after he was convicted with corruption related charges.

Sonko argued that judges and judicial officers handling the matter involving Gakuo proved they were inefficient and insensitive by denying Gakuo bail terms after his incarceration. “Inefficient judicial officers make suspects settle for other illegal means to access freedom.
I broke out of prison to attend the burial of my mother. The magistrate had denied bail yet this was an urgent and sensitive issue,” Sonko said. Former Nirobi Town Clerk John Gakuo died when he was still serving a three-year jail term at Nairobi West Prison.
Sonko’s sentiments were echoed by the late Gakuo’s family members who blamed his death to rigidity of some judicial officers. “Gakuo had served the nation diligently and was about 70 years.
He was not a flight risk at all and deserved bail,” said Simon Makallah, brother in-law of the deceased. The Nairobi county chief once found himself in trouble by confessing he had been convicted and jailed in Kamiti Maximum and Shimo La Tewa prisons. Jubilee party Vice Chairman David Murathe wanted him impeached for acknowledging he had flouted Chapter six of the Constitution.
Nairobi Senator stated that he had been locked up at the notorious prison due to a land dispute in Mombasa.
He narrated that he had bought a plot along the beach at a cost of Sh4 Million then before he could occupy it, he sold it at Sh8 Million to a client from Germany who wanted to construct a beach hotel.
Trouble began when the family that had sold Sonko the land got information that the German client had bought the land for Sh8 Million. They reported the matter to the police claiming that Sonko had swindled them which led to the current Nairobi governor being arrested.
