From laying off employees to appointing new CEO: New dawn for Telkom

Out with the old, in with the new! Did Telkom CEO, Aldo Mareuse

Telkom Kenya last month announced a new decision to lay off over 500. The mobile network company officially issued a requisite 30-day notice to its stakeholders and relevant authorities including the Ministry of Labour of a workforce-restructuring exercise.

However, as others are being laid off, the company today announced the appointment of Mugo Kibati as the new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Kibati, now former Group CEO of Sanlam Kenya takes over from Mr. Aldo Mareuse who has now left the company after two years.

Announcing the new changes in the company’s management, Chairman of the board, Mr. Eddy Njoroge, praised Aldo Mareuse for the work he did while CEO of the company.

“Notable milestones achieved during his tenure include the expansion of the company’s network by over 50%, successful rebranding of the company to Telkom and rolling out a 4G network, resulting in the company becoming the data operator of choice in the market. We wish him the very best in his future endeavours,” said Mr. Njoroge.

The new Telkom boss said he was delighted to be joining the company that is becoming one of the leading mobile networks in the country.

“I look forward to working closely with the staff, board, shareholders and all the company’s partners to get Telkom to the next level of its development in the near future,” said Mr. Kibati.

Mr. Mareuse wished his Mugo Kibati success on his new appointment.

“I wish to thank the board as well as the shareholders for the support extended to the team and I wish Mugo and the company great success in the years ahead,” said Mr. Mareuse.

Mr. Kibati is a household name in the business sector in Kenya having held many top positions in the private sector and in government too.

He was the founding Director General of Kenya’s Vision 2030 Secretariat and has served as Group Managing Director and CEO at East African Cables. He is the chair of the Board of Directors at Lake Turkana Wind Power Limited and the former Sanlam Group CEO.

Mr. Kibati holds a Bachelor of Technology (Electrical Engineering) Degree from Moi University in Kenya, a Master of Science Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in USA and a Master of Business Administration Degree from George Washington University (USA).
