“Michuki rules” here to stay. Shape up!

Michuki rules is still on motorists, matatu crews and passengers prepare to  face a stiff penalties from next week as the Government implements the rules.

The government had earlier  suspend the crackdown to allow negotiation with the matatu association ahead of the 12th November deadline.

Do you agree with the NTSA crackdown on noisy matatus?

However the National Transport and Safety Authorities (NTSA) Chair Lee Kinyanjui, says they will contact a crackdown on  matatus and buses with noisy horns, exhaust pipes and elaborate graffiti obscuring important details on their sacco ownership of the vehicle.

He urged the matatu operators to remove those modifications ahead of the next week deadline.

Kinyanjui further stated that, besides having communicated with Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Sacco owners prior to today’s exercise, the authority is still going to engage them further to evaluate the efforts made towards compliance.

However ,the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) Chairman Simon Kimutai down played the threats on crackdown saying it is clear sign of lack of coordination between the authority and the traffic police.

“There is no need to announce a crackdown when the rules you are enforcing are not new addig that, these are regulations that have been always known” explained Kimutai.

Besides, NTSA is regulator not an enforcer hence they should leave the work to the police,” said Kimutai.

“We needed to engage the government to understand what the rules were all about ,adding that, there was conflicting information from some arms of government,” Kimutai added

The chair further noted that some aspects of the regulations are just out to disrupt the normal running of the matatu business: “Issues like graffiti were already addressed by the president and our members are in compliance as it is a major source of income for our artists.
