You know your country has many problems when the people you have hired to ensure your security and that of your property are in actual fact the ones who will steal from you. Should we hire watchmen to watch watchmen?

After the match awaited laptops were finally given to Primary school children as promised by Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, two watchmen in Nyatike, Migori County so it fit to still the laptops from Kosiemo Primary School.

The two watchmen manning the school were today morning arrested following the theft of five digital literacy programme laptops at the school. Misiwi location Chief Julius Gogo confirmed the incident saying unknown people broke into the school’s administration block after cutting window grills before disappearing with the valuables.

The watchmen are now in police custody to help with the investigation of the stolen laptops, a 25-inch television and a number of text books that were also reported missing..

Mr. Gogo said his office is collaborating with local police to trail suspects linked to the robbery. He appealed to the school managements in the area to put in place proper security measures, noting that cases of theft of the primary school gadgets was alarming.

In August this year, 46 tablets and a laptop that were supplied by the Jubilee government at Mosobecho Primary School in Nandi County have been stolen after suspected burglars accessed the compound and broke into the room where the tablets were being stored.

According to the institution’s headteacher, he was called by the security guard who informed him that the school had been raided.

“The thieves broke into the strong room where the gadgets were kept and made away with them on Saturday night. They also broke into the staff room and head teacher’s office,” said the Head Teacher, John Keino.

Confirming the incident, Nandi Central Deputy County Commissioner George Matundura promised to conduct investigations to apprehend the suspects.

“Footprints led us to a short-cut through the school fence near the main road where the thieves seemed to have parked a vehicle that was suspected to have been used to ferry the gadgets,” said Matundura.

The institution’s watchman was also arrested amid investigations into the burglary.

The tablets were supplied in November 2016, with the school being among the first beneficiaries of the laptop project by the Jubilee government.
