Duale’s health bill rubbished, court battles loading….

Will the president come into rescue of Pharmacy Students after the parliament failing them? Amendments on Health Bill 2018 are awaiting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s sign to come into law, which they say will open ways for quack doctors.

The Pharmacy Students Association of Kenya has urged the President not to sign the proposed amendments to the Health Bill 2018.

The amendments were passed by Parliament last week. The students said they will sue if the President signs the Bill.

They termed the Bill sponsored by National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale “malicious”. The students demonstrated against the amendments on Monday.

According to one of the students Francis Ojiambo, if President Uhuru Kenyatta signs it, then anyone can open a pharmacy without quality checks and the right information.

“The government has failed to control quack doctors and if the President signs it, then anyone can be a pharmacist. Diploma cannot be equated to a degree,” he said.

Ojiambo said if the Bill is signed, it will water down the profession and eventually hurt Kenyans.

“We are opposed to the clause that gives the President authority to appoint board members of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. It stipulates that these appointees don’t have to possess a pharmacy degree but can be diploma holders,” he said.

Association president Cohen Andove said the amendments will derail the progress and milestones made. “Today drug-related problems are the leading causes of mortality in our country. Keeping pharmacists out of the loop further entrenches this absurdity,” he said.

The rate of quack Doctors in Kenya has been on a high rise, with the latest being quack Dr Murgor Wairimu operating in Nairobi’s eastlands, who was on Monday exposed by NTV’s investigative reporter Dennis Okari.
