On Kenya’s GDP, Cecily Mbarire Caught in Embarrassing Lie

Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Cecily Mbarire inaccurately declared that the Central region is the major contributor to Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Mbarire made the outrageous remark during a Mt Kenya MPs caucus meeting whose agenda was to lobby for more national government development projects in the region.

“We know that Mt Kenya region contributes over 60 per cent of our country’s GDP yet only 20 per cent comes back to its people.

“Mt Kenya region must claim its rightful share of development in the country within the remaining four years of this current administration,” she stated as chair of the caucus.

The latest report by World Bank indicated that Nairobi County as the highest contributor to Kenya’s GDP at 12.5% which translates to about Ksh340 Billion.

Nakuru was ranked at number two with an 11.2% contribution to the country’s GDP.

Kiambu county is said to be contributing Ksh300 Billion to the GDP.

According to the World Bank report, other leading contributors to the Kenyan economy are Kilifi, Machakos, Kwale, Meru, Kisumu, Laikipia Kisii and Kitui with each holding a GDP share of between 8.2% and 1.8%.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is set to release a detailed report of the 2018 findings on Kenya’s GDP later on in the week.
