This is not the first time this fake doctor has made headlines so if you are like me, you are probably wondering why this man, James Mugo Ndichu, popularly known as Mugo wa Wa is not already in a cell somewhere serving jail term.
Before the recent expose done by NTV journalist, Dennis Okari, Mugo wa Wairimu was already facing separate charges of rape, operating a clinic without valid licences and masquerading as a gynaecologist.
Really what criterion does our judiciary use when passing judgement?
In 2015, Mugo was arrested after a video recording went viral on social media. In the video, Mugo is seen sedating and raping a female patient in a hospital examination at Prestige Clinic in Githurai 44 estate, Nairobi. However, police said that the fake gynaecologist could not be charged with rape for lack of forensic evidence and witness statements.
The quack doctor is now wanted by police after it emerged that he is operating another illegal clinic in Nairobi’s Kayole estate.Two of his employees have already been arrested by the flying squad following complaints from the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board that reported that the two had been working without the required documents in the clinic owned by fake doctor Mugo wa Wairimu.
According to the flying squad officers, they recovered materials they believe could have been used to procure abortion on patients.
The quack doctor, Mugo wa Wairimu claims to have graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree from the University of Nairobi in 2000. Despite claims that the fake doctor is not approved by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board, patients continue to flock his clinic for treatment.
“Even if I am jailed today I will continue practising medicine while in jail. I will continue doing what I was trained to do since I have the skills courtesy of my six years of training,” said Mugo.
This begs the question, are the authorities too greedy for money that they rather make profits from people’s ailments than arrest these quack doctors?
According to the NTV Investigative journalist, monitoring drugs, patients’ safety and the ability to regulate the medical sector in general is poor, bordering on non-existent.
The head of Flying Squad, Musa Yego now says that they are looking for Mugo “for questioning” and have asked the public for their support in their efforts to make the arrest.
Is it that the patients who seek treatment from these quack doctors are unsuspecting or is it because such clinics are the only ones they have access to seeing as they are economically disadvantaged?
