Imagine working without a place to relieve yourself.Physically speaking it can be seen as torture and trust human beings to react when they are feeling pain.

Take the case of Kwale traders who have decried the lack of toilets along the beach and in the neighbouring Ukunda town.

To make sure they are taken seriously the traders in Msambweni Constituency, Kwale County, have threatened to relieve themselves at Governor Salim Mvuyra’s office in a protest against lack of toilets in the area.

Tourists have to literally search for a place to relieve themselves,” said one of the traders.

“If the county government is not willing to set up toilets then we are going to defecate at the governor’s office,” added another trader.

They issued the county government with a five-day ultimatum to build toilets along the beach and in Ukunda town, failure to which they will rally the residents for protest.

The residents have raised concern that the lack of toilets poses serious health risks as they some of them are forced to relieve themselves in the bush.

“We are giving Governor Mvurya five days to begin setting up toilets or we will rally the local residents to his office,” said the group.

“It is a big shame that in the 21st century and with Devolution in place we are talking about lack of basic amenities like toilets. It is a shame,” added a local resident.

However, Msambweni Sub-county administrator Khamisi Mwandaro has assured the residents that the county is set to address the matter.

The eradication of open defaecation greatly remains a matter of discussion if significant steps have to be made to ensure access to improved sanitation.

Sanitation has been declared as a human right by the United Nation.
