Embattled IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati tried so hard to have last year’s repeat elections postponed an issue that would have resulted into a constitutional crisis.

This is according to Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa. The MP says that, Chebukati through his lawyer and other political operatives prepared an affidavit that would have supported the postponement of the October 26th poll.

“I now have it on good authority that the chairman actually had appointed his own lawyer and with the help of political operatives, prepared an affidavit that would have supported the application to postpone the October 26 election. The affidavit remains under lock and key.”  Barasa said through an article he wrote on The Standard.

The first time MP also accuses the IEBC chair of firing his CEO Ezra Chiloba to please his masters. According to Barasa, the now famous 12 point manifesto that Chebukati wrote to Chiloba in the aftermath of last year’s nullified elections was drafted by political stakeholders outside the commission.

“The much publicized 12-point memo that he sent to former CEO Ezra Chiloba was drafted by political stakeholders outside of the commission and later delivered to the CEO through the media. Incidentally, all the responses to the 12-point questions can be found in an affidavit that Chebukati had sworn in court for the presidential petition because these were the very question that the petitioner had posed.”

According to the MP, Chebukati sneaked the KIEMS kit outside the commission to his kin to have it tested before the elections ‘and perhaps to manipulate it days to the elections.’

Chebukati, a lawyer by profession is also accused of channeling the commission’s legal work to his law firm, a clear example of misuse of office.

All these are damning accusations that if proved in court would subject the IEBC chair to a very long time in prison.

With these revelations, is it time for Chebukati to leave IEBC?
