Police now to receive house allowances

Police officers set to receive house allowances months after President Uhuru ordered them to vacate government houses.

The police officers would start receiving house allowances from December 2018 after being given 90 days to vacate from the government houses.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet  confirmed government commitment to police reform agenda on house allowance following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive requiring cops to vacate public houses.

Speaking to officers at Embakasi Police College ,Boinnet disclosed the police would start receiving house allowances from December 2018, based on Nairobi housing rates.

He added it is upon them to choose where to stay as long as they do not abscond duties. “We want our officers to work without having to worry about their families. Some of the officers have been working on shifts due to lack of housing. Going forward, each can operate from anywhere,” Boinnet said.

As part of ambitious police reforms, junior police and prison officers who currently reside in government leased houses will vacate by January 31.

To effect the new policy, Uhuru asked the National Treasury to initiate termination of all leases with landlords of police estates within 90 days of the effective date of the new allowances after which the officers will be required to enter into tenancies with property owners.

The changes are meant to ease congestion in government police houses and help the officers to settle down in houses with their families comfortably.

Boinnet also disclosed  government plans  to build more houses for officers who want to rent close to station.

Do you  think by giving them house allowances  will curb  suicide cases since most of the officers commit suicide out of frustrations.
