If you are not performing then you get axed, right? Former Dortmund manager Peter Stoger sanctioned the sale of the Gabon forward in January before he was replaced by Lucien Favre this summer.

Aubameyang became Arsene Wenger’s last signing at the club – the Frenchman shelling out £56million to take him to the Emirates.

He has been a huge hit in north London with 19 goals in 26 appearances for the club.

Stoger said he had his heart set on the move as soon as the Gunners showed interest.

And he has now revealed the lengths the 29-year-old went to in order to get his way.

“He left me no other choice,” he said.

“He trained well four days of the week.

“But to underline his wish for a transfer, he skipped team meetings before games or refused to run during the final training.

“We did our best to keep him for at least another half a year, but Auba wasn’t ready for that.”

Aubameyang was initially brought in to challenge Alexandre Lacazette, who was struggling after a £46m move from Lyon at the time of his arrival.

However, they have gone on to strike up an unlikely partnership, with new boss Unai Emery often preferring to use them in tandem.

Stoger says he is happy to see his former player flourishing in the Premier League and insists he bares no ill will towards him.

“Honestly, I got along well with him although he kept me pretty busy for four weeks,” he added.

“But Auba personally apologised to me before joining Arsenal.

“He told me that his behaviour had nothing to do with my person and that he had felt my support.”

The Gabon international has made a promising start to life in north London, recording 19 goals in 26 appearances as the club had made its transition to life under Unai Emery, but Stoger says he was always fighting a losing battle to keep Aubameyang in Germany.

When you know you know.
