Recent Kenyan bank theft strategy that will shock you

One of the funniest heists in history took place inn July 1, 1999, when armed robbers stormed the banking hall of Mashreq Bank at the ICEA building on Kenyatta Avenue and made away with Sh 500,000. Witnesses of the daylight recount that on the fateful day, the gangsters sang ” “Toa ndugu, toa dada ulichonacho wewe, umtolee bwana Mungu wako (Give brother, give a sister, whatever you have give your offering to God)”, as they frisked bank customers who walked in unaware of the robbery.

Well two I&M Bank employees have decided to make their own history of theft too but unfortunately their tracks were uncovered. They were due in court today over the theft of Sh 27 million from the institution’s Kisii branch.

According to police, the two committed the offense by mixing 100 and 1,000 notes, in each 1 million bundle of notes.

“Mr.Tom Odhiambo Adinda & Mr.Daniel Ochieng Okweh; both employees of I&M Bank ~Kisii Branch & Key Vault custodians were arrested for stealing over Ksh 27 Million from the bank by mixing 100 and 1000 notes in each 1M bundle of notes. To appear in court on Monday,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations stated through its twitter account.

They were also key vault custodians of the bank.

Twenty years ago, six sharply dressed armed gangsters swaggered into a Nairobi bank and after five minutes, they casually walked out with Sh 96 million stuffed in three gunny bags without firing a single shot.

At the time, this was a staggering amount that could be ten-fold now, going by the current inflationary rate.

With almost divine calm, the thugs had emptied the entire strong room of a tier-one bank’s headquarters, making it one of Kenya’s biggest bank heists yet.

A hardened top city detective described the daylight heist as “mafia-style” pointing out that in his entire career as a law enforcer, he had never seen such a brazen and daring gang.

In November 2017, thieves accessed the bank’s strong room after digging an underground tunnel and made away with Sh 50 million. Not even the police, stationed just 150 meters away from the bank could stop the robbers from accomplishing their mission.  The three young men were later arrested after 17 million of the stolen money was recovered in a one bedroom rent house Juja town.
