Disappointing- Governor Obado to spend one more night in jail Despite Paying Bail

Embattled Migori Governor Okoth Obado will stay in prison despite paying the Ksh5 million cash bail as directed by the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that there developed a hitch in the surety documents that he presented to Court.

Obado allegedly presented two of his cars, a Toyota Prado and Toyota Land Cruiser V8 as sureties.

However,  an issue with one of his sureties and the lapse of business hours at the court saw his lawyer Cliff Ombeta decide to deal with the issue on Thursday morning.

This postponement of the bailing process will force Obado to spend the night at the Industrial Area Remand Prison.

The Judge, however, set six strict conditions including that Obado should not skip any court session as his bail could be revoked at any time.

“He shall not go anywhere within 20Kms of Homa Bay County boundary on all sides of that county,” she cautioned.

Lady Justice Lessit further warned Obado against communicating with the parents, siblings or rather any close relative of Sharon Otieno.

“The accused will refrain from contacting or intimidating whether directly or by proxy witnesses in this case,” she said, adding that he should not discuss the case in a political meeting or private gathering.

The High Court judge further directed Obado to deposit travel documents and be reporting to the deputy registrar once a month with the pre-trial hearing set for February 14, 2019 and the full hearing between May 6-17, 2019.

Justice Jessie Lessit granted the governor bail on Wednesday although she denied two of Obado’s co-accused, Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero, bail.

The Prosecution stated that they would be calling 30 witnesses to testify in the case over the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno on September 24.
