Tottenham Hotspur make the trip to PSV Eindhoven tonight (Wednesday) looking to kick-start their latest Champions League campaign following back-to-back defeats to Inter Milan and Barcelona.

A late snatch-and-grab condemned Spurs to a tough-to-digest 2-1 loss away to Inter Milan in their opening Group B game at the San Siro, which was followed by an enthralling 4-2 defeat at home to Barcelona in their next fixture, meaning Mauricio Pochettino’s men are pointless and already six points adrift off the top-two.

As a result, the consecutive clashes against PSV in the next couple of weeks are absolutely pivotal.Six points from those two games would hurl Spurs right back in the mix, however a defeat in Holland tonight would not only rupture their hopes of making it through to the knockout stages, but see the club set an unwanted record.

Never in Tottenham’s entire history have they ever lost four successive major European matches in a row.

Furthermore, should Spurs return to England pointless they’ll join an unwanted group, which includes Newcastle United (2002/03) and Blackburn Rovers (1995/96).

They are the only two English teams to ever lose their opening three Champions League group stage matches – quite remarkably Newcastle would recover and in turn progress through to the last-16, with Bobby Robson’s men the only team to ever achieve this feat.

PSV have also been left empty-handed from their own games against Inter and Barcelona, meaning they are currently enduring their worst ever run in the Champions League (10 winless matches),…

although if the club can transfer their domestic form over into the European arena then Spurs could be in for a long night (nine wins from nine Eredivisie games).

Wish Spurs well in their match tonight, won’t you?
