Migori governor Okoth Obado might have earned a temporary release on bail pending the hearing and determination of his case but he has first hand information on the inhumane conditions in which  suspects are subjected to while in Remand Prisons.

Obado has spent close to one month in prison, a time in which he has eaten enough of poorly cooked meals and had to use a toilet which was set beside him.

The conditions were so bad that the Migori County Chief had to be rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital a few weeks ago after falling ill in custody. You see, hungry mosquitoes don’t care whether you’re a governor or a chicken thief.

And Obado, has made only one request to the Parliamentary committee on security, to improve the conditions of Remandees.

Members of the committee led by their chair Kiambaa MP Paul Koinage paid Obado a visit on Tuesday. They met him donned in prison clothes in a tiny room.

And the only request the governor made was “When you go back kindly check the situation of the facility, anyone can land here,” Obado said.

The committee had gone to give the governor a message of hope. Obado maintained his innocence in the murder case of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

“I shouldn’t be here. On the day Sharon died, I was in Nairobi. I have nothing to do with her death,” he told the MPs.

Obado blamed his political opponents for his woes. He said some leaders are taking advantage of his situation to smear his name.

“Weapons have been drawn by my enemies appearing in funerals. They are saying that after I have killed, I am now running to Jakom,” he said.

The governor was later freed on a ksh 5 million bail on Wednesday. Justice Jessie Lessit however, gave strict conditions that he must adhere to.

“He shall not go anywhere within 20Kms of Homabay County boundary on all sides of that county,” Justice Jessie Lessit warned.

She further directed that Obado should not skip any court session as his bail could be revoked at any time.

Justice Lessit further warned Obado against communicating with the parents, siblings or rather any close relative of the deceased.

“The accused will refrain from contacting or intimidating whether directly or by proxy witnesses in this case,” she said, adding that he should not discuss the case in a political meeting or private gathering.
