Moral Police, Dr. Ezekiel Mutua Strikes Again

The CEO of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) was on Hot 96 FM with Jeff Koinange and Professor Hamo discussing the role of KFCB in content regulation and protection of children from exposure to harmful content

Speaking at the interview, Ezekiel Police called on parents to be moral champions and monitor the content children are watching on television and on the internet which he says has a lot of uncensored content that might adversely affect children.

According to Dr. Mutua, today’s children are incredibly tech savvy therefore it is important to empower them with information on how to safely interact with the internet without posing a danger to themselves.

He added that the KFCB has put in place safety measures like age ratings that available for parents to use to help protect their children against pedophiles.

Earlier this year in May, President Uhuru Kenyatta assented the Cyber Security and Protection Bill into law which imposes hefty fines and long prison terms for cyber bullies and fake news dealers.

The law also targets journalists, media houses, social media users, bloggers and other internet users. According to Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, the law will enhance the security in cyberspaces and ensure children are protected from exposure to harmful content.

Dr. Mutua also urged Kenyans to be at the forefront of promoting culture, moral and national values as well as protecting children against exposure to harmful through content. He added that the Kenya Film and Classification Board is partnering with strategic stakeholders like YouTube and Facebook to ensure the protection of children is prioritized even on online platforms.

The KFCB boss has come under fire after he banned the Kenyan film, ‘Rafiki’ on grounds that it contains lesbianism scenes which promote homosexuality, terming it as illegal in Kenya.

The film, directed by Wanuri Kahiu premiered at this year’s 71st Cannes Film Festival in May. It was the first Kenyan feature film to receive such an invitation from the biggest and most prestigious film festival in the world.

According to Dr. Mutua, children have been continuously socialized to accept evil and embrace such destructive behavior as drug abuse, violence, alcohol, irresponsible sexual practices and other vices as normal.

“Our young people are our future; you are the long awaited change. Your choices, persuasions, standards and commitments are a preview of the days to come,” he said.
