Kenyans on Twitter differ with their governors on the agenda of the proposed referendum. The governors have now come out to say that they want 30% of natural resources proceeds allocated to host communities arguing that they hold vital dockets in the economy. The natural resources include minerals, natural gas, petroleum, forest resources, wildlife resources and fisheries.
Murang’a county governor, Mwangi wa Iria on Wednesday delivered a letter to the IEBC demanding for a referendum.
“It is time we sort our economic politics once and for all. Economic independence will put Kenya on the next pedestal of economic emancipation,”he said.
In a campaign called ‘Rasilimali initiative’, the governors now want the 14 devolved functions which include health, environment, agriculture, markets, fisheries, control of pornography, disaster management, animal control and welfare, county planning and development, to be supported by both skills and cash.
They claimed that the devolved functions are key to the growth of the economy and will bring into fruition President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda if supported by the national government.
