HASSAN WARIO AND KIPCHOGE KEINO BOW TO DPP’S ORDERS

Former Sports CS and Kenya’s Ambassador to Austria Hassan Wario and ex-NOCK President Kipchoge Keino today presented themselves to the DCI at 5:30am to avoid arrest after Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Douglas Ogoti on Monday directed them to present themselves before the Directorate of Criminal Investigions (DCI) by 6am on Thursday morning.

This was after a directive by the DPP which ordered the prosecution of the two, “Accordingly, I have directed the DCI to immediately have the persons arraigned in court. They are hereby directed to report before the DCI headquarters on or before October 15 2018, failure to which the process of obtaining warrants of arrest shall commence before a competent court.”

They are expected to appear in court on Friday at 8.30a.m to take plea on charges levelled against them over mismanagement of funds of close to 55 million Kenya shillings that had been allocated to facilitate the athletes’ participation in the Rio Olympics held in 2016.

Mr Wario is expected to be charged with six counts of abuse of office while Mr Keino will face one count of the same charge. Also facing charges linked to the embezzlement and misappropriation of funds is the Former director of Administration, Haron Komen and Former Finance Officer in the Sports Ministry, Patrick Nkabu.

The DPP now says that he has sufficient evidence to charge the officials with the unauthorized payments, over-payment of allowances amounting to over Ksh.15 million and purchasing tickets worth Ksh.22 million which were not used by athletes but joyriders.
