Coach Migne Confirms the State of Wanyama’s Injury

Victor Wanyama was withdrawn as a precaution while playing for Kenya

Harambee Stars Captain Victor Wanyama is likely to be in action this weekend when his club Tottenham takes on Westham in the London Derby.

Wanyama, limped off in the 3-o win African Cup Qualifier pitting Kenya against Ethiopia at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

The midfielder, who has struggled with injuries over the past year, hobbled off in the second half with an apparent hamstring problem.

Wanyama had scored in the 3-0 win and head coach Sebastian Migne believed the injury was “not serious”, insisting he was withdrawn as a precaution.

Wanyama has made five appearances for Spurs this season

This will come as a reprieve for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino who has a host of important players in the sickbay.

Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Serge Aurier and Mousa Dembele will both be assessed together with Wanyama ahead of this weekend’s clash.

Eriksen has been managing an abdominal problem while Alli has been out since September with a hamstring injury and Dembele and Aurier have had thigh issues.

Tottenham confirmed last week that Jan Vertonghen would be out until December with a hamstring injury.

Spurs are currently on a poor patch having lost their two Champions League matches this season to Barcelona and Inter Milan and risk missing out on a place in the knockouts stages.

They are currently 5th on the EPL log with 18 points, same as 4th place Arsenal but with an inferior goal difference. They’re two points behind the leading trio of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Wanyama is likely to appear in his first ever AFCON showpiece in Cameroon next year despite being in the national team for more than 10 years.

Kenya has never played in the Africa Cup of Nations since 2004, when Jacob Mulee led the likes of Denis Oliech and Musa Otieno to Tunisia.

The current side currently sits on top of Group F with seven points having beaten Ghana and Ethiopia at home and drawn with Ethiopia away and lost to Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone, who are currently suspended from any international competitions by FIFA, risk being expelled from these qualifications.

If that happens, then Kenya will be guaranteed of a slot in Cameroon, as they will finish at least in position two. Two teams will qualify from each group for the tournament which has for the first time been expanded to 24 teams.
