The Third Way Alliance Party leader Dr Ekuru Aukot is only left with 400,000 signatures to hit the required 1 million signatures needed to pass through the first stage of the looming referendum.
With the 600,000 signatures collected so far, Aukot will have to present them to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission( IEBC) once he attains the target, for verification.
After verification, the referendum bill will then be presented to all the 47 County Assemblies for approval before going back to the National Assembly and Senate for it to be passed.
From there it will have to seek popular votes from Kenyan Citizens.
During the fifth Devolution Conference held in Kakamega late April, NASA leader Raila Odinga proposed a three tier system of government.
In Raila’s proposal, the number of counties are to reduce to about eight which can be headed by one governor and two senators.
Raila argued that Kenyans are over represented, thus seeking to scrap positions of nominated representatives and women representatives in a bid to reduce Kenya’s high wage.
Ekuru’s Thirdway Alliance has proposed a referendum to introduce a seven-year-one-term presidency, install 194 members of the National Assembly and the Senate, down from the current 417, abolish nominations in both Houses, as well as impose a life sentence on people convicted of corruption and theft of public funds.
The party is further proposing that salaries for State officials be capped at Sh500,000 inclusive of allowances for the President, and Sh300,000 for MPs.
