It seems there is no light at the end of the tunnel for Migori governor Okoth Obado. In fact there is non forthcoming in the near future, as the mother of his girlfriend has moved to court asking that the governor is not granted bail.

Melida Auma, the mother of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno wants the court to deny the governor bail saying he will interfere with investigations.

A sickly Obado, appeared in court on Monday morning together with his two aides where they were slapped with a second murder charge, killing Sharon’s unborn baby. A paternal test revealed that Obado was the baby’s father.

This means that the three are facing charges of killing two people, Sharon and her baby. Justice Jessie Lessit allowed the prosecution to consolidate the two cases into one. The judge also said that she will make a ruling on his bail application on Friday.

But the embattled governor, who has been admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital since Wednesday last week, could be in for a rude shock if Sharon’s mother has her way in the courts.

In an application filed in court on Monday morning, Ms. Melida Auma Rangili argues that releasing the three accused persons on bail will expose witnesses to intimidation, and evidence interference, further adding that it will unduly undermine the prosecution’s case.

“The thought that those accused of killing our daughter can be freed during trial is chilling, a situation not helped by the fact that, as family members, we are possible witnesses in this matter,’’ reads the affidavit.

Ms. Auma also stated that everyone linked to the murder of Sharon Otieno and her unborn child should remain in custody even as the trial is expedited.

She adds that the governor has influence in Migori County and across Nyanza, adding that three other suspects, alleged to be subjects of the county boss, are still at large.

“I pray to the Honorable Court to balance request for bail against the greater public interest to find the killers of Sharon and her unborn child; and to determine that the grant of bail will undermine the latter,” argues Sharon’s mom.
