PHOTOS: Group of Mourners Ask For Burial Support in the Streets of Nairobi Carrying a Coffin!!

Loosing a loved one is something we all wouldn’t want to experience given the psychological torture and financial constraints that come with it. Burial ceremonies have become an expensive affair in Kenya with the bereaved families not only required to buy a good casket and pay mortuary bills but also required to deal with other emerging trends in funerals.

These include getting a state of the art hearse, hiring catering services, providing a good sound system and in some cases some good wine. All these require a good amount of money that most families in Kenya cannot afford and are therefore always forced to look for other ways to solicit for burial funds.

Families organize fund drives better known as ‘Harambees” or come up with pay bills to raise funds. The society has set the standards so high that many families have no option but to follow the set trends for fear of being rejected or made a laughing stock.

In some cases, people will not attend the final send off of your loved one if you don’t provide good food, music and wine. Funeral budgets are so inflated. For instance, Slain Rongo University Student Sharon Otieno’s burial will cost a whooping 1 million shillings.

A Family in Nairobi therefore decided to use a very unique way to raise burial funds for their departed loved one. Dressed in black, the family carried a coffin and banners requesting for help.
