The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission now claims that Evans Kidero acquired vast properties and assets during his tenure as MD of Mumias Sugar Company and Governor of Nairobi.
The anti-graft watchdog believes that Kidero colluded with public officials from the County Government and MSC to defraud the government of colossal sums of money.
Preliminary investigations so far reveal that Kidero received tens of millions of shillings into several of his bank accounts.
According to the EACC, Kidero has amassed unexplained wealth which is not commensurate to his known legitimate source of income.
The claims are response to Kidero’s suit which he has sued the EACC over harassment after a recent search at his business offices and residential premises.
Investigator Mulki Abdi Umar claims that sometimes in early 2016, the commission received several allegations of misappropriation of public funds and illegal acquisition of wealth by Kidero during his tenure at MSC and governor.
He argues that bank statements obtained from Kidero’s account at Family Bank, reflects large cash deposits of money amounting to Sh317 million over a period of less than five years.
The deposits were allegedly made on a regular basis, quite characteristic of money laundering.
The commission explains that it was necessary for it to acquire search warrants to access Kidero’s premises in order to establish the truth or otherwise of allegations of corruption and economic crimes.
Kidero has taken the EACC and DPP to court claiming that since he exited politics he has been on the receiving end of “threats, attacks, harassment, witch-hunt and intimidation by the respondents.”
On his part, Kidero avers that he is a man of fair means who has accumulated his wealth gradually over the course of years since his first employment in 1983.
Kidero wants the search warrants quashed insisting they were obtained without due procedure.
