Louis Saha gives Zinedine Zidane replacing ‘clueless’ Jose Mourinho verdict

That’s the opinion of former Red Devils favourite Louis Saha who thinks results will determine the manager’s future. Mourinho finds himself under pressure at Old Trafford after an abject display in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.

And that has left Manchester United nine points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after just seven matches. But Saha thinks Zidane would have a lot of work to do with the squad he would inherit from Mourinho, a very different task to when he was at Real Madrid.

He said: “You expect a lot from the manager. It’s been really difficult this year, more than the others. Defensive football has always been Mourinho’s strength, but offensively they don’t seem to have a clue right now. It’s a pity. A question has definitely been raised. I’m not the one to answer because now I’m only a fan, but of course we all expect more from everybody, the players and the staff. How long will he stay? It’s up to the results.

“When you see the team playing this way, any club in the world with this size and this history, you have a lot of pressure and you have to find a solution pretty quickly and I hope they do it. But with this team, whatever manager is going to come is going to have the same issue. It’s a lot of work for whoever comes.

“Zidane? He would want to pick a big team with big players, at Real Madrid he had a team of Galacticos – but it’s a different set up at Manchester United. He would have a lot of coaching to do, more than just management.”

The United manager’s relationship with Paul Pogba remains a hot topic after the Frenchman was hooked in the second half of the game at the London Stadium with United trailing by two goals.

The Sunday Mirror claim Pogba is prepared to go on strike if the situation between him and Mourinho worsens.

Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez, who was axed from the squad for the West Ham game, is reportedly facing an uncertain future after the Daily Star claimed United are actively looking to sell him after a dismal start at Old Trafford.

While Ed Woodward was sat beside Patrice Evra at the London Stadium on Saturday he should perhaps have sounded him out on the possibility of joining the Manchester United board.

Their absentee owners, the Florida-based Glazer family, are more interested in the American football version and their late father never stepped foot in Manchester. His six children dominate the board and their delegates – University of Bristol alumni Woodward and Richard Arnold – are from banking backgrounds.

A manager synonymous with third season syndrome and whose past bickering with chairmen and owners has resulted in his removal. Woodward does not have to be a football expert to know that and the only surprise is some are surprised by United’s stagnant start. They did not lose their third Premier League game last season until December and the previous campaign they suffered three defeats from their first seven was under David Moyes. That was also preceded by an amateurish summer transfer window where Woodward irked the manager.
