Muturi denies MP’s trip

Five senators will not be attending the Women’s World Championships in Tokyo, Japan after National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi cancelled the trip altogether.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka had earlier on approved the trip to International Volleyball Federation games to be financed by taxpayers money.

They presented an application indicating that the parliament should fund them to watch Kenyan Team Malkia Strikers battle out in the Championship.

The five senators who had been cleared to leave for Tokyo on Saturday include Irungu Kang’ata from Murang’a County, Christopher Lagat of Bomet and nominated senators Beatrice Kwamboka, Victor Prengei and Christine Zawadi. They were each set to pocket a Ksh1.4 Million per diem.

The nine-time Women African Volleyball Champions, Malkia Strikers, are slated to participate in the FIVB championships beginning Saturday.

Speaker Justin Muturi justified his decision by citing a judicial notice of public outcry and condemnation associated with an earlier trip to Russia for World Cup Championship.

The National Assembly speaker also chairs the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), which gives him veto powers in such decisions.

In June this year, the state came under fire after they sponsored 30 MPs to attend World Cup In Russia but presented a copy pasted report back with no likelihood of boosting the nation’s sporting sector.

This is the fourth time Malkia Strikers are attending the championship after finishing 21st and 20th places in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Malkia Strikers will each pocket Ksh80,000 for the three weeks they will be representing the country in the Asian country translating to Ksh3,800 a day.
