Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has explained why he was furious with winger Xherdan Shaqiri following their defeat against Chelsea.

The Reds crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening after losing 2-1 to Chelsea at Anfield with Mohamed Salah coming on as a substitute in the final minutes of the game.

Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring in the second half but goals from Chelsea’s Emerson and Eden Hazard condemned Liverpool to miss out on their first trophy this season.

After the game, Jurgen Klopp looked to have a heated exchange of words with Xherdan Shaqiri but the German manager explained the situation, saying: “I spoke about a free-kick, the last one

“We wanted to have Mo [Salah] a bit wider, so we had passed the ball to Mo, the whole bunch of players was in one direction – where we shot the ball, actually.

“But if we can send Mo into a one-on-one situation in the last situation of the game, it would have been not too bad. What I said was about the free-kick, nothing else,” he added.
