Outrage After U.S. TV Show Use Real Life Westgate Footage

The Kenya Film Classification Board  saw the  suspension of a promotion video for 24 Legacy that was using scenes of CCTV footage from the 2013 Westgate Mall terror attack.

The producers of the film that runs on Fox Network have disguised the clip as an entertainment video that was shot in Alexandria, Egypt.

The Board  also demanded that the video is immediately pulled down from YouTube, as it was in contravention of content distribution laws applicable in Kenya.

KFCB Chief Executive Ezekiel Mutua said the Board would file a formal complaint against what he terms as reckless and unprofessional attack on the dignity and sensibilities of Kenyans, and will pursue all available channels to ensure that the producers face the necessary sanctions.

The Board has launched further investigations on this matter to establish how the footage was obtained from Kenya, and whether due process was followed.

“The Board regards the movie as a repulsive, insensitive and reckless piece of art that heartlessly evokes the painful memories of the tragic terror attack. It flies in the face of basic considerations of human dignity, in total disregard of the feelings of the victims and their families. Further, the movie goes against the Code of Ethics for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya. It is not only an inaccurate and false narrative of the Westgate terror attack, but also a callous piece of entertainment that demeans Africans and Kenyans in particular,” Mutua says in a statement.

Kenyans were outraged after the American Network aired real footage of the Westgate Attack on  episodes of 24 Legacy.
