Ronaldo saw red in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Valencia last night and faces a two-game ban. That means he will miss the trip to Old Trafford to face his old club Manchester United. And Burley thinks the nature of the incident means UEFA won’t rescind it.

“There didn’t seem enough in it for me at all,” Burley said .“But I think what will happen here is I don’t think UEFA will rescind it.

“I don’t believe it was a red card at all, but I don’t believe they will (rescind it) because they will point to ‘there was contact’. A pull of the hair or whatever and they’ll say ‘you’re not allowed to do that’. I don’t think they’ll rescind it.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for an altercation with Valencia defender Jeison Murillo with suggestions he pulled his hair. And Burley thinks VAR would have cleared the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. When Burley was asked if he thought it was even a yellow card, and said: “I don’t think so.I don’t think they will budge on it because they will back their referees.

“I mean what we’ve got here is Europe’s elite competition and the World Cup was a great success with VAR, big pressure, we’ve got most of the leagues in Europe with VAR and here we’ve got the elite of the elite and we’re relying on a couple of extra officials with their sticks behind the goal.

“In the Liverpool game they got some decisions correct but we’re talking about one of the greatest players in the world here in a competition that they’re trying to win and why he’s at the club and I think that could have potential cleared it up.”
