Why Ferdinand is gutted with his former club Manchester United

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes the made a mistake of selling Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverly.

Louis van Gaal, who replaced David Moyes ended up selling the home-grown talents during his two-season spell in charge of Old Trafford. The Red Devils sold Welbeck to Arsenal in a £16m deal in the 2015 summer transfer window much to the frustration of some of the club’s supporters.

Cleverley, meanwhile, moved to Everton from Manchester United after his contract expired at the 20-time English champions.

The Red Devils have Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford in their current squad to ensure the presence of some local talent in Jose Mourinho’s squad. However, Manchester United legend Ferdinand is disappointed that the English pair were allowed to leave Old Trafford.

“I’m fairly confident the likes of Cleverley & Welbeck who came through the Manchester United system would have been at the club longer if Sir Alex Ferguson had stayed as manager. [They] were vital members of the squad that loved the club and know the DNA,” he said.
