CS Kariuki to shed light on Pumwani hospital saga before the senate

Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki was expected to appear before the Senate Health Committee Thursday to shed light on the status of the Pumwani Maternity Hospital, following the discovery of 11 infants stashed in polyethene bags.

The Senators will be seeking to determine circumstances that led to the deaths of the infants and establish the conditions that mothers are subjected to as they give birth.

She is also supposed to table a comprehensive report on the Equipment Management Scheme in public hospitals.

The sitting follows a fact-finding mission to the referral hospital by the legislators who faulted the Nairobi County Government for neglecting the health facility which has been on the spotlight since Monday.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja wondered why there is no cold room, nor working incinerator at the institution, despite Sh15.8 billion being set aside to cater for health within the county.

Devolution Committee chairman John Kinyua echoed his sentiments saying, that the county government has failed to discharge its mandate.

Following the fact-finding mission, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko delivered a storage unit to contain the situation.

Workers at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital defended the management against accusations of negligence.

The workers – who included doctors and nurses – told journalists that they work under tough conditions and accused the county of failing to address their concerns
