Fresh from being declared bankrupt, former Presidential candidate Cyrus Jirongo was arrested on Tuesday over failure to pay a KSh 20 million debt.

Jirongo was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and taken to Muthangari Police Station.

The High Court in Nairobi issued a warrant of arrest against the former Lugari legislator in August this year over a Ksh.20 million loan balance owed to businessman Brian Yongo.

The former Lugari MP is currently being held at Muthangari Police Station.

Businessman Yongo has accused Jirongo of failing to pay him the balance of a loan he advanced him. He allegedly loaned Jirongo Ksh.25 million between 2014 and 2015 but the former politician has since paid only Ksh.5 million. According to Yongo, the entire loan was to be settled in three installments.

In his argument, the businessman cited Jirongo’s failure to settle the debt as his reason of moving to court in order to recover the money.

In the prime of his political career, Jirongo, or CJ to both friend and foe and others, had Moi’s ear.

“I was running the show and it’s no secret that I had Moi’s ear,” the former Lugari MP says with self-evident nostalgia for golden days gone by.

And they were truly golden for Jirongo acquired a reputation for being the 1992 poll’s Mr Money Bags that was unprecedented in the eastern African region.

YK’92 is remembered for many things, most of them not endearing, but top among them is the huge sums of money that they dished out liberally in their campaigns.

Although President Moi’s face appeared in all the currencies, Sh500 note was much associated with YK’92’s activities and its flamboyant chairman so much so that the note was nicknamed “Jirongo.”
