Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has revealed that he wants defender Nacho Monreal to sign a new contract with the club. Monreal is out of contract at the end of the season and can begin talking to clubs about a free transfer in January.

The 32-year-old has been a regular fixture under Emery since he took over the club, however, and the Spanish boss says he has been impressed with the left-back’s performances.

“First, I knew Nacho Monreal in Spain when he was playing in Osasuna and at Malaga,” Emery told reporters in a press conference on Thursday.“After six years here, I came here and I know him as a new Nacho Monreal.

“After two weeks, after two months and now, I can say that I am very happy with him because he is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level. “The rest of that, for me, is very important. I think we need to find a new contract with him to stay with the Arsenal team.”

The Spain international had been linked with a move back to La Liga during the summer transfer window, with Real Sociedad one of the teams reportedly interested in the full-back.

Monreal arrived at the Emirates Stadium in a £6 million deal from Malaga in January 2013 and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the Gunners.

Meanwhile, Emery is also hoping that the Gunners will reap the rewards of Mesut Ozil’s retirement from international football.
