Ronaldo’s agent blast UEFA

Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent blasts Uefa after Luka Modric wins big Champions League award

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s agent has hit out at UEFA for snubbing the Portuguese in their Champions League Player of the Season award.

The forward was a key member of the Real Madrid side that won its third consecutive Champions League title, scoring 15 goals en route to the final, and was awarded as the Forward of the Season.

But the Player of the Season award went to Luka Modric, whose performances in midfield were integral to Real Madrid’s success, as well as being vital in Croatia’s run to the World Cup final.

Ronaldo was not in Monte Carlo to collect his Forward of the Season award and the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, believes the snub was “ridiculous”.

“Football is played on the field and that’s where Cristiano won,” he told Portuguese newspaper Record (via Football Italia).

“He scored 15 goals, carried Real Madrid on his back and conquered the Champions League again.

“It’s ridiculous, shameful. The winner is not in doubt, as Ronaldo is the best in his position.”

Ronaldo left Madrid in the summer after nine years, joining Serie A giants Juventus. And the Old Lady’s director Beppe Marotta agreed with Mendes in believing his forward was more deserving than Modric.

“I can say it was a personal decision not to come and he made it earlier today,” he told Sky Sport Italia, as reported by Football Italia.

“We want to respect that. As far as we are concerned, we are profoundly disappointed that he did not receive the trophy.

“This is for performances in the Champions League and not the World Cup, so we maintain Ronaldo deserved it more.

“I take nothing away from the decision of the jury, but if I had voted, I would’ve voted for Ronaldo. I don’t say that because he is our player, but as a lover of football.”

The awards were handed out during the draw for the Champions League group stage, which saw Ronaldo and Juventus put against Manchester United, Valencia and BSC Young Boys.

Playing 13 times in the Champions League for Real Madrid last season, Ronaldo only failed to score in the final three matches.

Nine of Ronaldo’s 15 goals came in the group stages with four against APOEL, three against Borussia Dortmund and two against Tottenham Hotspur.

But his most important goal game in the 90th minute against Juventus in the quarter-finals, scoring from the penalty spot to edge Real Madrid ahead 4-3 on aggregate – when their dreams of a 13th Champions League looked to be at risk.
