‘Zinedine Zidane will only succeed Jose Mourinho on one condition’

Manchester United are stuck in a rut with defeats to Brighton and Tottenham plunging Mourinho’s position into uncertain waters. The 55-year-old is understood to retain the backing of the club’s hierarchy for now, with Ed Woodward boosted by their first-half performance against Spurs.

Other reports have claimed, though, that Manchester United will bring the axe crashing down on Mourinho if they slip to defeat at Burnley on Sunday.

Zidane’s shadow is looming large with the Frenchman available following two-and-a-half successful years at Real Madrid.

Yet the Manchester Evening News say he will only take the job on HIS terms.

They fail to elaborate but the implication is that Zidane will want to invest in the squad and have a say on who they bring in. Mourinho wanted a centre-back and a winger this summer and got neither. With Anthony Martial set to stay, Zidane may only want a defender.

He was starved of signings during his time at Bernabeu – something that makes his exploits in Madrid all the more impressive.

Dani Ceballos and Theo Hernandez were the only two big-name recruits during his time in charge.

And history suggests United may make finances available to any new manager.

David Moyes is the rare exception but it was not for the lack of trying. He thought he would get one of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale or Cesc Fabregas – but ended up with Marouane Fellaini.

United signed Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw during Louis van Gaal’s first summer.

And they have spent £300million on new recruits for Mourinho since he took the job in 2016. Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku signed for £89million and £75m respectively.

Zidane will want assurances before the United job given the magnitude of the challenge.

The men  add Zidane is currently settled in the Spanish capital with his family and United will have to meet the Frenchman’s terms should any speculation of a deal become reality if Mourinho departs.

But reports have claimed the Red Devils also have five other candidates in mind.

The Independent have suggested Mauricio Pochettino, Didier Deschamps, Leonardo Jardim, Massimiliano Allegri and Marco Silva are also under consideration.

And whether Mourinho can yet save his job remains to be seen.
