Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria Dealt a Major Blow

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has restrained Governor Mwangi Wa Iria  from throwing Murang’a Water and Sanitation Company (Muwasco) board chairman Peter Munga out of office.

The court also ordered the governor not to implement or enforce the gazette notice published on  August 17 which indicates that Joseph Kimura is the new chairman of the board. Kimura was appointed to take over from Munga who has served in the position for 16 years.

In the case presented before Justice Byram Ongaya, Muwasco has been listed as an interested party. The court also cautioned Wa Iria, his officers or agents against interfering with the operations of Muwasco, its staff and the board of directors.

The inter parties hearing is scheduled for September 3 in the matter certified as urgent. On Monday, the staff of Muwasco switched off water supply to clients to protest the move by the county government to take over its management.

Journalist Arrested

A Murang’a based Nation journalist was arrested by police over accusations of biased reporting of water wrangles between Governor Mwangi Wa Iria and tycoon Peter Munga. Ndung’u Gachane was arrested on Thursday, August 30, outside Murang’a Water and Sanitation Company (Muwasco) offices while taking photographs.

In a report by Daily Nation, Ndung’u was arrested after the media house ran a report on the water crisis in Murang’a County which did not go well with Muwasco.

Ndung’u was nabbed at the office gate when he went to find out why the employees of Muwasco were barred from entering their offices after the county government dumped sand and stones at the gate to prevent them from entering the offices.

The reporter recorded a statement at Murang’a police station and was later released after the intervention of County Administration Police commander Mohammed Farah.
