Mourinho backed to rise by club star

That’s the view of Red Devils centre-back Eric Bailly, who came in for criticism after a poor performance in the 3-2 defeat to Brighton last weekend. It was United’s first loss of the season after a 2-1 victory over Leicester on the opening weekend, when Bailly impressed.

There have been reports that Mourinho and Pogba have fallen out at Old Trafford, though Manchester United chiefs deny this. Indeed, Pogba has been named United captain in the opening two games and has scored in both.

It’s not just the players coming in for criticism though with Mourinho coming under increasing pressure having failed to win a trophy last season.

But Bailly insisted the Manchester United team are still behind their manager, despite Pogba’s recent comments on the character of the team.“What Paul talked about was the attitude of the players,” Bailly told the Mirror.

“I don’t think we took it into the game. I think it was a bad day for all of the players, the whole team underperformed. We need to put it behind us.

“I can’t guess what’s going on in other players’ minds but he is the manager and we have to listen to him and obviously perform better.7

“It’s a long championship, it’s still early to say but I personally believe we can still win the title if we stick together and carry on working hard.

“It’s good that we have a big game this week but, in my opinion, it doesn’t matter that it’s Tottenham because we just have to perform better than we did against Brighton.

“The boss has tried to prepare the team, get us back to our best and it was a good thing that we had a two day rest after the Brighton game. We’ve worked hard after that this week and hopefully we’ll get a better result on Monday.

“Beating Tottenham, winning on Monday, would send a strong message but not in terms of winning the title because it’s still too early to talk about that.

“But it would send a strong message in terms of the morale of the whole team.”

Mourinho rarely lasts longer than three seasons at a club and is currently in his third campaign at Manchester United.

Reports suggest Zinedine Zidane is being lined up as a replacement for the Portuguese boss and pundit Jamie Carragher believes Mourinho will soon depart.

The former Liverpool star told the Daily Telegraph: “If Mourinho leaves United at some stage this season – and I do believe they will have a new coach a year from now – what big job can he expect next?

“Of course he will still be one of the world’s most esteemed and coveted coaches, but his next club position would have to be in the tier just below the current elite.

“He would have to go somewhere seeking to rebuild, trying to catch-up, rather than one where the foundations are in place and he can target the world’s most expensive players. No other team in the Premier League’s top six would pursue him.”
