Girlish? Manchester United goes pink

Manchester United have confirmed their away kit for the current season will be pink in tribute to a local newspaper’s former sports section.

The strip will go on sale on Tuesday, and is in tribute to the Manchester Evening News

United announced that they will wear the pink away strip in 2018-19 in the programme for their Monday night Premier League encounter with Tottenham Hotspur.

The kit had been leaked back in July, with pictures revealing that the shirt had already gone on sale in Taiwan.

Manchester United's new pink away kit for the 2018-19 season has been confirmed by the club

The cover of ‘United Review’, the matchday programme at Old Trafford, is designed to look like an old newspaper page, with the headline ‘The Pink is back!’.

The adidas kit will be launched on Tuesday and is inspired by The Football Pink newspaper, which was created by the Manchester Evening News and went out on Saturday afternoons until its closure in 2007.

The strip was revealed on the front cover of the programme for the Tottenham match

“Its legacy endures and this season The Pink rides again,’ said the front page of United Review. ‘Not just in the hearts and minds of the fans, but on the backs of their heroes too.”

The strip goes on sale on Tuesday, and could be worn by the team for the first time next Sunday when they play away to Burnley. In July, several pictures emerged of a previously unseen United kit on sale in a Taiwanese adidas shop.

They appeared to confirm that the away strip would be pink for the 2018-19 season – and now that has been confirmed.

It will be the first time any Manchester United team has played in pink, having never previously used it as a colour for an away shirt.
