With the penalty against Girona, Sergio Ramos has now scored in 15 consecutive league seasons which is a landmark for many strikers, never mind defenders.

The Andalusian made his debut in the 2003/04 season, when he played seven games and was not able to score but since then he has gone on to show a prowess in front of goal.

He first hit the back of the net in September, 2004, against Real Sociedad in his last season for Sevilla and then with Real Madrid the following season he hit four goals. Ramos’ record for goals is in the 2016/17 campaign when he got seven.

Real Madrid made it two wins out of two to start the 2018-19 LaLiga season with a 4-1 victory over Girona on Sunday night at the Estadio Montilivi in Girona.

The hosts jumped out to an early lead through Borja Garcia, but would do themselves no favours in gifting Real a penalty on each side of halftime. Sergio Ramos converted the first spot kick, while Karim Benzema handled the second. Gareth Bale struck for the third score on the hour mark and then Benzema wrapped up the three points with a late goal.

After their shaky start, Real came together nicely, especially in the second half and showed that they have the firepower to match, or perhaps even better, the teams from the last several seasons. Ramos now has a total of 56 league goals in 432 games, that makes him the 13th highest goalscorer still active in the LaLiga Santander.

Having scored in 15 seasons he is now four off the record of consecutive campaigns which is 19 by Gainza. Santillana is second with 17 and if Ramos strikes next season then he is level with legends like Ansola, Arza, Marcial, Pirri, Kini, Raul and Gento.

The Catalonians were having their way on the left side of the Real defence, funneling all their attacks on that side of the pitch. Portu and Lozano were running rampant and there could have been another goal or two if not for some last-ditch defending.

There was no panic from Real though and after Bono made a tremendous save off an Isco shot, Marco Asensio earned a penalty after being brought down in the area by Marc Muniesa. Ramos then stepped up and floated in a Panenka to level the score, 1-1.

Real were the much stronger side to start the second half and Asensio would earn another penalty just minutes after the re-start after Pere Pons made a mess of things in defence and fouled the former Mallorca man in the area. This time Benzema stepped up and slotted in the spot kick to make it 2-1 Real.

The goal forced Girona to open up, playing right into Real’s hands and Isco happily obliged, playing an inch-perfect pass for Bale to run onto and the Welshman beat Bono to extend the Real advantage to 3-1.

Navas was kept on his toes though by Girona and showed why he’s still the No.1 at Real by making a fine save on a Borja Garcia shot. Still, the match belonged to Real and Benzema put the three points on ice when he turned in a Bale cross to round out the 4-1 scoreline, a goal that was confirmed by VAR.
